TikTok is no longer limited to the usual text feed under videos. The platform is significantly expanding its engagement tools in the comments and introducing several new features designed to encourage more active discussion of videos. These are not just cosmetic changes, but an attempt to turn the comment section into a fully interactive environment.

What new formats will appear in comments

  • Voice messages. Users will be able to leave voice replies up to 60 seconds long. These comments will receive automatic text transcription and built-in translation. However, the feature will not be available to everyone: it will be open only to users over 18 years old.
  • Interactive polls. Polls can be launched directly in the comment thread. The author can offer up to five answer options, and results will be displayed in real time. This allows for quick audience feedback right under the video, without sending users to third-party services.
  • Photo carousels and Live Photo. Comments will no longer be limited to text or voice: replies can include up to nine images in a carousel format. In addition, support for Live Photo will be added.

When the new features will be available

Voice replies and photo carousels will roll out globally over the next month. Polls and Live Photo replies are already available on the platform.

How this will affect TikTok algorithms

Comments remain one of the key signals for TikTok’s recommendation system. The more actively users engage in discussion, the more reasons the platform has to show the video to a new audience. The new tools lower the participation barrier: not everyone is comfortable writing a detailed text, but many are willing to leave a voice message, vote in a poll, or reply with a picture.

With this, TikTok aims to increase not only the number of comments but also the depth of engagement. And the longer users interact with a post, the higher the chances for reach growth. Essentially, the platform is making discussions another media format within itself—on par with videos, live streams, and other interactive mechanics.
